A quality alliance of Chile’s leading wine producers joined forces in May 2002 at a bicoastal symposium to showcase the top tier wines of their respective houses.
Guest moderator Steven Spurrier, a leading wine authority, author, and contributor to Decanter, described the event as “a unique occasion, since it is the first presentation ever to be done in the United States by five Chilean wineries who have set a common goal: to highlight and promote Chile’s image as a world-class wine producer.” The participating producers included Rafael Guilisasti of Viña Concha y Toro, Eduardo Chadwick of Viña Errázuriz, Aurelio Montes of Montes, Tim Mondavi of Seña, and Agustín Huneeus of Veramonte.
During the events, held at the Regency Club in Los Angeles and Daniel in New York, wine professionals tasted over 25 wines including several varietals from different vintages of the ultra- and super-premium Chilean wines currently marketed in the U.S. Together, this collection represented the ultimate in quality and diversity from Chile’s finest wine regions—Aconcagua, Maipo, Apalta (Colchagua), and Casablanca—where these wineries have pioneered research and development of the terroir, giving it full expression in their wines.
As demonstrated at this series of tastings, Chile has moved well beyond simple, fruit-driven wines perceived as “good quality for the money” to producing wines with far greater subtlety and complexity.
